2012 Colorado High School Cycling League State Championship Race

Close contests and classic north Fruita desert trails.

Fruita, Colo. - The Grand Valley is hosting the 2012 Colorado High School Cycling League State Championship race October 21st, near the popular 18 Road trails managed by the Bureau of Reclamation – Grand Junction Field Office. The third year of the Colorado League, continues to experience tremendous growth in participation, with 450 high school athletes representing 38 teams from Durango to Laramie, Wyoming.

“The North Fruita Desert is a spectacular location for the season finale. I am amazed by the extraordinary hospitality extended by the local community. Many people plan to extend their visit to take advantage of the incredible trail system here. The competition is very close in several contests, which amplifies the team scoring and the fun factor!” stated Kate Rau, Executive Director of the Colorado League.

The competition for the overall series team in the Division 1 category is tight where Boulder and Fairview currently hold first and second while Vail, Golden and Salida are all in the running for third through fifth.

The Division 2 team leader is Animas High from Durango, with Green Mountain Composite, and Durango High vying for second and third. The local Grand Valley team racers will be striving for a possible third place overall trophy, as they currently stand in fourth place with only 87 points behind Durango.

The Overall Individual standings are up for grabs across 11 categories. The girls Varsity Leader India Waller (Animas) holds a commanding lead and second through fifth well be determined with racers from Fairview (Ksenia Lepikhina) and Salida (Kelsay Lundberg and Sage Kitson) striving for overall podium positions. Racers from Boulder (Michael Dessau), Animas (Stephan Davoust) Durango (Levi Kurlander, and Sepp Kuss) will compete for Varsity boys’ series championship jersey. The underclass fields are equally fierce where any racer can take home a medal.
