Last Sunday Parkways in East Portland this Weekend
September 28, 2012
Portland, Ore. – Families and neighbors in East Portland are preparing to end the Sunday Parkways season this weekend on a seven-mile loop of traffic-free streets, including two miles on the Springwater Corridor. The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced that the fifth and final Sunday Parkways of 2012 is coming to East Portland this weekend on September 30.
Sunday Parkways is a series of free community events opening the city's largest public space – its streets – for people to walk, bike, roll and discover active transportation. Estimates put total attendance at the events above 300,000 since it began in 2008.
The seven-mile east Sunday Parkways route will connect Lents Park, Bloomington Park, Ed Benedict Park, the Springwater Corridor and Glenwood Park. The Transportation Bureau chose the route to highlight current and planned Neighborhood Greenways in the neighborhood. Music, vendors and activities are located in the parks and along the route. It’s free to attend and open to the public from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
In addition, Bureau of Environmental Services staff will celebrate completion of the East Lents Floodplain Restoration project with music, information and project tours at the intersection of the Springwater Trail and SE Foster Road. The East Lents project reduces flooding and restores Johnson Creek salmon habitat.
Sunday Parkways is organized by the Portland Bureau of Transportation with its many community partners, including presenting sponsor Kaiser Permanente, Universal Cycles, Portland Parks & Recreation, Metro and GetAround.
Motorized vehicles are allowed to pass through the route at designated crossings and allowed on the route for resident and emergency access.
