Salt Lake City, Utah (July 16, 2012) – This August amateur cyclists have a unique opportunity to ride like the pros. The same course used for the Queen Stage of the Larry H. Miller Tour of Utah will be open to 600 recreational cyclists for The Ultimate Challenge, just hours before the pro peloton is unleashed on Saturday, August 11. The Ultimate Challenge will coincide with the UCI stage race, and 40 spots are still available this week for a $10 discount with early registration.
The Ultimate Challenge is a non-competitive bicycle ride for individuals, families and riding buddies who want push themselves to their own endurance level and enjoy a once-in-a-lifetime road cycling experience. Participants will be treated to incomparable scenery, full logistical support and an official finish line at three optional locations. This route utilizes the same roads and XO Communications Sprint Lines as the Tour of Utah’s Stage Five presented by Exergy Development Group. This is the signature stage of the six-day Tour of Utah, held August 7-12 and having gained recognition as “America’s Toughest Stage RaceTM” for 38,500 feet of climbing during the week. Stage Five alone offers 10,000 feet of climbing.
The traditional Ultimate Challenge recreational ride follows the complete 100-mile course from Park City to Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort. For this year’s Ultimate Challenge, the shortest ride option is just 35 miles and finishes in Heber. A second ride option, new for 2012, is 74 miles with a finish in Alpine. Regular registration is $105 for all cyclists; a$10 discount is available for the next 40 riders to register online this week.
Heber City, near Wasatch Mountain State Park, will have a Tour of Utah Viewing Party for Ultimate Challenge riders participating in the 35-mile ride. There is an XO Communications Sprint Line adjacent to the Viewing party at 218 S. Main Street in downtown Heber. Race fans will be able to watch the race from start to finish via Tour Tracker® on a big screen television in high definition, and enjoy food and beverages inside a spacious hospitality tent.
The 74-mile ride option for the Ultimate Challenge allows participants to ride the awe-inspiring Alpine Loop, which takes riders past scenic Mount Timpanogos. Once riders reach Alpine, they will be treated to the second Tour of Utah Viewing Party. Like Heber, the Alpine Viewing Party will provide live race action on a large screen and a hospitality area. Located at 20 East 100 North, the Viewing Party in Alpine is located at 20 East 100 North Street. This is also an XO Communications Sprint Line, for a great spot to watch the racers as they make a final push to the penultimate climb on Stage Five presented by Exergy Development Group.
All Ultimate Challenge participants receive ride support,a post-ride lunch, souvenir sport socks from DNA Cycling, a commemorative performance shirt, one coupon for free oil change at Larry H. Miller Toyota (Murray, Utah), 1st Endurance product and an official water bottle.
