Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ Squad Superb at BC Superweek

July 11, 2012

Maple Ridge, BC – The Local Ride/Dr. Vie Superfoods+ elite women’s cycling team presented by Local Ride Bike Shop and Dr. Vie Superfoods+ has had a superb start to the province’s biggest week in competitive cycling, BC Superweek, with an overall general classification win at the Tour de Delta on the weekend and a victory at the UBC Grand Prix criterium Tuesday evening, courtesy of Steph Roorda (Vancouver).

“The team has had an amazing showing so far this week,” said Team Manager Barry Lyster. “They have displayed excellent teamwork with the goal of getting Steph [Roorda] across the finish line first.”

As a member of the Canadian Track Cycling Women’s Team Pursuit roster, Roorda’s forté is most certainly her ability to sprint. However, she is also a well-rounded cyclist and a force to be reckoned with in any type of race, whether it is flat or hilly. At the UBC Grand Prix, Roorda escaped from the pack and finished first with a minute to spare over her chasers.

“Steph [Roorda] is on a mission right now, you can see it in her eyes,” said Lyster, referring to the fact that Roorda was left off of the recently announced Olympic roster. Roorda had been training for the last several years with Olympic qualification in her sights, winning multiple international medals with the squad, and missed out by a slim margin at the Canadian Olympic trials.

BC Superweek kicked off last Friday with a criterium in Delta, the first stage of the Tour de Delta. Roorda initiated the final sprint early, but was beaten out of the final corner by American rider Nicky Wangsgard and had to settle for second place. The next day, Roorda had her revenge, however, when she snapped up victory in the Ladner criterium. She went on to finish second in the road race, which allowed her to take home the general classification win.

Teammates Jean Ann Berkenpas (Maple Ridge) and Lisa Howard (Vancouver) have been integral in creating dynamic and exciting women’s competitions and helping Roorda reach the podium.

After a well-deserved rest day on Monday, racing action was back on track Tuesday for the UBC Grand Prix. Wednesday hosts the highlight of the week: the Global Relay Gastown Grand Prix. This high-profile event in the heart of Vancouver’s Gastown, on hiatus for the past two years, is back this year and ready to entertain the tens of thousands of expected viewers with exciting high-speed two-wheeled competition featuring some of the continent’s top cyclists. A huge cash purse of $40,000 will be sure to create unforgettable battles on the streets of downtown Vancouver.

The Giro di Burnaby criterium takes place on Thursday and the three-day Tour de White Rock wraps up the week-long cycling extravaganza, July 13-15.
