Colorado Springs, Colo. - The hot weather that we have been experiencing in Colorado Springs has been appreciated by one group - the track sprinters from around the world who have gathered for the ProCycling US Grand Prix of Sprinting - held this weekend at the Velodrome in Memorial Park - Friday June 22 through Sunday June 24.
At this week's Tuesday night racing the locals said they felt like they were "floating" and the speeds were the fastest we have seen this summer. Watching the internationals at training, it is a safe bet that a number of track records that were set at last years Grand Prix will be in jeopardy. In fact some of the coaches believe a World Record is not out of the question if the conditions are right. Temperatures are expected to be in the mid 90's this weekend.
There are 54 riders from 9 countries who will take to the track this weekend, headlined by the German Olympic Team. Germany has brought no less than 6 World Champions to Colorado Springs and they are very focused on task at hand. "We have trained so hard the past 3 weeks. We have had very few rest days. But it is all part of the preparation for London" World Champion, Miriam Welte stated earlier this week. "We are looking forward to the weekend. It should be fun."
In addition to the Germans, the Olympic Teams from the Netherlands, Venezuela, Canada, Trinidad and the U.S. will be here. Top riders from Scotland, Suriname and Colombia round out an amazing international field.
Jimmy Watkins, the U.S. Olympic Team sprinter set a new track record for the flying 200m at the Velo Center in Los Angeles just a week ago. His effort shows he is in top form. Watkins also hold the American record in the flying 200m. Jimmy will be in Colorado Springs for the ProCycling US Grand Prix of Sprinting and for several weeks after training for the London Olympics.
