Ryan Anderson Atop KOM Standings at Tour de Suisse
June 11, 2012
(Verbier, SUI – June 10, 2012. Canadian cyclist Ryan Anderson (Vancouver, BC) is currently sitting in second place of the King of the Mountain classification, tied with cycling legend Frank Schleck, at the 2012 Tour de Suisse.
Ryan Anderson was part of a two-man breakaway with Alesandro Bazzana of Team Type 1. The break showed a maximum gap of nine minutes, before the climbs. The longest stage of the current Tour de Suisse, at 218 kilometres, featured two HC climbs.
In the first KOM sprint line, Anderson launched the sprint with 200m to go, and took the maximum points for his efforts. Anderson also grabbed the first intermediate sprint points and the prize money that came with the sprint.
“It was the plan for one of us to make the break and helpful to fly the team colours on television,” said Ryan Anderson, exhausted from his efforts, after the race.
The two-men break was caught with 40 kilometres to go, and Anderson retreated to the back of the peloton after his outstanding efforts in the opening 180 kilometres.
Frank Schleck will be wearing the actual KOM jersey tomorrow as the jersey is awarded to the top rider in the overall standings in case of a tie. In addition to finishing tied with Schleck in the KOM classification and taking the opening sprint points, Anderson won the most combative award for his efforts.
Team SpiderTech rider Raymond Kuenzli, who is from Switzerland, rose to the occasion on home soil during the first road race and second stage of the Tour de Suisse, spanning 218 kilometers from Verbania to Verbier. Kuenzli finished in 24th position of the 160-rider peloton, and jumps to the 34th place in the general classification.
Kuenzli is sitting in second place of the best Swiss rider classification.
The race was won by Portugal rider Rui Alberto Faria Da Costa of Team Movistar, followed by Schleck four seconds behind and Mikel Nieve Ituralde of Euskaltel-Euskadi, twelve seconds behind.
