Fare Increase for Canby Ferry Starting July 1

June 4, 2012

By Samantha Shimogawa

Beginning July 1, 2012, pedestrians, bicyclists, motorcyclists, and drivers will have to dish out some extra cash to cross the Willamette River. The Canby Ferry, which crosses the river between Canby and Wilsonville seven days a week from 6:45 a.m. to 9:15 p.m., has raised its fares for pedestrians and cyclists from free to $2, motorcyclists from $1 to $2, and drivers will see a rise from $4 to $8.

In January, county commissioners considered closing down the ferry service after realizing that the county subsidizes it for more than $400,000 a year. With the economy as it is they were faced with either ending the service or raising its rates. Regular riders were surveyed on the issue and overwhelmingly agreed to pay a little more to keep it around.

On May 1, 2012, Clackamas County commissioners decided to oblige the public and raise the ferry’s rates. The new tolls are expected to generate $241,600 a year, which should help the county pay for some necessities. Commissioners promise to revisit the rates next year and adjust the fares accordingly.
