May Means Bike to Work

May 1, 2012

By Darren Dencklau

It’s that time of year again, when riding your bike is fitfully encouraged by numerous friendly competitions in the form of Bike to Work Month, Bike to Work Week, and Bike to Work Day. If you haven’t pumped up the tires, lubed the chain, and started to ride already, now is the time.

Numerous activities and events are taking place around the Northwest in the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, and in areas like Olympia, Spokane, Whatcom County, Hillsboro, Rogue Valley, Couer d’Alene, Moscow, Pocatello and more.

In King County, the Group Health Commute Challenge is running from May 1-31. It’s a great way to join coworkers in logging the most miles and to keep you motivated to ride throughout the month — and hopefully the remainder of the year. F5 Bike to Work Day will be held on Friday, May 18. Commuter stations will be again setup throughout the city, offering various snacks, drinks, information and more. Also scheduled is the annual Rally at Seattle City Hall, where Mayor Mike McGinn and others will speak about what’s new on the bicyclists’ agenda. Later in the afternoon, beginning at 4 p.m., the Ballard Block Party will be happening where there are opportunities to win raffles, make bike art, test out the latest bikes and gear, and get a free tune up from BikeSport and Second Ascent. Sign up your team at commutechallenge.cascade.org.

Just south of Seattle, Pierce County will begin the month by hosting the Tacoma Bike Swap on April 30. This event is perfect for those looking for an inexpensive bike and gear to get motivated for bike month. Bike to Market Day is on May 5, encouraging cyclists to swing by the farmer’s market on Broadway where there will be seven dollar helmets with free fittings and more. REI is sponsoring this year’s Commuter Challenge. Visit www.piercetrips.com for details.

In Spokane, Bike to Work Week is May 20-26, while the Commute Challenge runs all month long. Events and information will be readily available throughout the week. Prizes will be given to whoever encourages the most people to sign up for the Challenge. Visit spokanebikes.net for more information.

One state to the right of Washington sees Boise Bike Week happening May 14-19, presented by Treasure Valley Cycling Alliance and ACHD Commuteride. Highlights include a Twilight Ride, numerous clinics, a bike fair and the Pedal Power Parade wrapping things up on Saturday, May 19. See boisebikeweek.org.

In Oregon they do things a little differently, where Bike to Work Month takes place in September. However, the Oregon Walk + Bike Challenge goes from May 1-31, encouraging families to use active transportation to get their children to and from school. Awards will be given to the schools at the event’s conclusion. Details can be found at walknbike.org

These are just a few things taking place for this special month that celebrates the bicycle and those who use it to go about their daily lives. It is part celebration, part activism, and mostly a fun time to meet others. Go to bikeleague.org to find out what is going on in your area.
